Are you working from raw .dv?  If so, just compress it to .mpg as shown here
on the DTP wiki:

Do yourself a favor, and don't sweat the details.  Just compress to .mpg and
put it up on the Internet Archive, and your friends can download it from
there or view it streaming from the Internet Archive.  No muss, no fuss, no
costs, no admin time.  And they can download the full, hi-res compressed
version if they want to.
You can see and download our rough-edited video here, where we currently
have 59 hours of rough-edited video.  This video will need to be re-rendered
for most applications other than casual watching, as it is our "source
code".
