What James is hinting at is that external hard disks used to come preformatted 
as FAT, which "just works" under most distros, but has no concept of keeping 
track of ownership or permissions. Now, such devices use NTFS, which also "just 
works" under some distros, with the same effect.

Under any native filesystem, the "operation not permitted" message you got 
makes zero sense, despite the previous messages.
