Here are the options that I have considered so far, and my best
understanding of the advantages and disadvantages
1. fish:// (or ssh) using Konqueror over the giga switch. Speed = about 10
MBps. This is a convenient solution because it permits me to do other stuff
with the machines as currently configured. No need to add additional
cards. Simple and easy for an unsophisticated user to deploy.
Disadvantages: insecure, as I am using a semi-public network shared by
others on the floor, although the network is behind a professionally
maintained firewall, and is in a building with 24/7/365 guards and a camera
network on this floor.
2. Crossover cable from machine to machine. Some people here have said it
might be faster than using a 10/100/1000 switch. Downside: I would have to
get cards for both of the machines, and I have had no experience doing this,
and so there would be a learning curve.
3. sneaker net using an external HDD. Advantage: more secure than the giga
switch over a semi-public network. Disadvantage: combersome, as it
requires me to physically hook up drives from one machine, transfer onto the
HDD, unhook the drive, attach it to the second machine, and transfer again.
4. sneaker net using an internal HDD. Advantage: speed of transfer.
Disadvantage: installing the drive (slow).
So far, it seems as if fish is my best option.
