To my astonishment, Christian's recent $30 D-Link switch purchase _is_ 
claimed to support frame sizes up to 9600 bytes[1].  The real question, 
then, is whether the two NICs do.  Anyhow, if it helps, I attempted to
document this issue a few years back:  "Gigabit Ethernet" on
