Of a certainty, the buffering function performed automatically whenever
you put a switch or hub between two machines _does_ make it easier to
deal with cranky ethernet chipsets. Whatever works. All I was really
saying was that (in the general case) it pays to try a straight-through
cable and then a crossover _first_. Plan B of inserting a suitable
switch or hub would definitely follow after that -- especially given
that small, all-gigabit unmanaged switches have fallen to $30 (!). (I
had no idea they'd gotten that cheap. Thanks for pointing that out.)
