FWIW, the household's motley collection of switches and hubs does
include one (1) 10Mbps ethernet hub. One only -- and it even has a
10Base-2 "thinnet" coax connector, which makes me shudder with more bad
flashbacks than the late Dr. Hoffmann ever needed fear from his famous
bicycle ride.
And the point is, in _our_ context, that's pretty much good enough for
most uses that are likely. The household has several mostly autonomous
boxes owned by residents, with intra-house bandwidth being used
primarily for SSH/scp on an occasional basis as needed.[1] Other than
that, everyone's talking out through the same aDSL gateway to the
Internet, so, when people look startled at our (occasional) use of a
10Mbps hub, I ask them, rhetorically, "Where are _you_ going in such a
hurry?"
[1] 'Course, if we were shuffling 1.5 TB datasets around the house, that
would be a different matter.
