Hullo!

True. Interpreters are indispensible when you arrive and first unpack
your bags, but eventually you'd better at least learn to read the street
signs and how to use your phrase book, or you might end up on the ferry
to Saloniki, rather than making your dinner date in the Plaka District
with the nice view of the Acropolis.

Anyhow, I second Mark's recommendation of reading a small stretch of
_Running Linux_, on which a bunch of us did our teething.

Manpages are a suboptimal place to learn something completely unfamiliar
from, as that's not what they were written for: They're maximally terse
quick references, rather than tutorials. OTOH, if you want to know in
very few words exactly how "df" and "du" work -- to pick a salient
example -- there's nothing better.

Bitteschön.
