Yep, that's your problem.  Wow, didn't know anyone actually used
networking gear that old anymore ^_~.  The max speed of 10Mbps ethernet
is around 125kBps.  If you're using a *hub* and have other devices
plugged in, you'll get collisions, which reduce that even further.
Hell, with half-duplex 10Mbps, you'll take a hit with just 2 devices.
You should be able to pick up a 4-port gigabit switch for $30 or less,
or, as Scott mentioned, a crossover cable will do in a pinch (but might
not be a long-term solution depending on your needs).
