[svlug] using Comcast modem and a Linksys router?

I need a little help getting a router working with a Comcats modem for one
of the students who got a box from the ACCRC - Untangle installfest.  The
Gutsy box can't see the Internet, but a Windows Pro 2000 box can see the
Internet.  Daniel Gimpelevich, who is almost never wrong about these things,
believes that this modem will recognize only one MAC address (if I
understand Daniel correctly).  Since her mother has a Windows Pro 2000
desktop box that is currently connected to the Comcast DSL modem, Daniel
thinks that we need to call Comcast to get their permission to recognize any
other device.

We would like to try to connect the router to Comcast modem, which hopefully
will then issue IP addresses for the two boxes down stream, the Windows box
and the Ubuntu box.  I am wondering if we should just contact Comcast and
ask them to allow the router to stand between the Comcast modem and the two
boxes, or if there are some other tricks that might work.
