I am assuming that you are running Debian.

Do you have the "initscripts" package installed? It contains
/etc/init.d/mountdevsubfs.sh, which should mount the pts FS for you at
/dev/pts among other FSes.

Also, are you running a Debian kernel or your own kernel?
