Do you have Intel video? If so, check your /etc/X11/xorg.conf and make
sure the driver for your video card is "intel" instead of "810" or any
of the others. This should allow you to get back into X if you have
intel video. I had to do this fix even on a Dell 1420 preloaded with
Ubuntu.
You can also try "do-release-upgrade" from the console if you can't
get back into X. I believe that is the actual logic that Ubuntu uses
for an upgrade to a new release. Also, I think that Ubuntu (and
Debian) recommend aptitude for maintaining packages at this time.
