[svlug] interrupted ubuntu update

My desktop machine is multiboot.
The other day I was updating ubuntu, did some other things, and in the
process I thought ubuntu had finished the update. I started to reboot
back to fedora, I got a warning that the update wasn't finished,
pressed "cancel the reboot", and the machine rebooted.
Now, it will boot into ubuntu, but just into text, no X. I had been
doing the update with update manager, but that won't work without X.
Is there a simple way of telling it to continue the update from where
it left off?
Failing that, it turns out that the update was only to 7.04 rather
than 7.10, is there someway that I can use my DVD to upgrade directly
to 7.10 without it wiping out my other OS partitions? Every time
I've tried to install ubuntu, it has played nicely with windows, but
wants to stomp all over my other linux partitions. Now that I've got a
bunch of stuff on this machine, I don't want to lose everything.
