This is indeed the case, and the lesson here is that one always needs to
be careful what expectations one has of off-the-shelf software, regardless
of the quality of the hardware.

They were standard UART PCI cards, and qualifying any further would
achieve no useful end, because the kernel largely can't distinguish
amongst most of them, anyway.
If you value any "Use what the programmers use" reasoning, you'll use a
USB adapter and not an add-on card.
