 That has not been my experience, but one should do the proper legwork
to achieve the best results when adding hardware.

resides with the Dapper Drake LiveCD than with the hardware.

 Can you post which cards you had the failures with so that the OP can shorten
his search?

 This one worked under SuSE 10.0 to enable the use of an U.S. Robotics
external modem back when I was running that distribution on that particular PC
I had built. Of course, that does not guarantee that it will work for the OP
in his particular setup/requirement, but it's a start.
