This would be a good point if you had serious traffic.  I host quite a
few high-res photos on home aDSL, and it's not a problem.  If any of
those _did_ start becoming a bandwidth problem, I'd move them to, e.g., 
a Linode virthost (but not Flickr, et al.).

Oddly enough, I find that putting one's Internet presence on other
people's (e.g., Web 2.0 "social networking" companies') hosted
applications, instead of on one's own servers, _lessens_ one's
visibility, by diffusing it.  I'm sure there are any number of
exceptions, though.

Anyhow, IMVAO, people who are serious about open source _use_ it to the
extent practical.  Picasa isn't.  Flickr isn't.
