Several years ago, I was looking for Linux software that generated
mailing labels with address bar codes (or something like that), and
could qualify for reduced rate bulk mail processing. The program
has to be certified by the USPS; every certified program I found
on the list ran on Windows only.
I could not find an open source or Linux binary program in this area.
Actually, the USPS probably doesn't want anyone tinkering with
stamp-printing source code and mass producing stamps for free. They
probably require a "black box" binary solution that they can blindly
trust.
I was able to produce zip-sorted labels, which saved my local non-profit
volunteers a bunch of production time. But I never had enough time
to pursue the bar code issue.
I'd be curious if there is any mail processing software certified by
the USPS on Linux.
