The Dell 1390 uses a broadcom chip, which is partially supported via a
reverse engineered driver in the kernel called bcm43xx. Apparently very
recent versions (kernel 2.6.22 and above?) of the bcm43xx driver support
this particular Dell card (
http://www.linux-geek.org/index.php/2007/04/22/dell-1390-native-linux-driver-how-to-updated).
It is also apparently usable with ndiswrapper (
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?t=514676). However,
with the effort that Intel puts into supporting linux, I would spend the
extra money if you can to get the 3945 with a good open-source driver (
http://ipw3945.sourceforge.net/).
