I don't think the cellular system in the BA worked that well,
considering it was only a "moderate" quake, with no infrastructure
damage.

I had my phone on the serial port on one of my Linux boxes, and used
it to send text messages, and dial a VOX number.

The text messages seemed to have a much better chance of getting
through than the VOX dials.
