I'd up the ulimit setting, and run growisofs directly for burning
dvd's. I've never used k3b for DVD brning; I just run growisofs
directly (growisofs -dvd-compat -dvd-video -Z /dev/hdd /tmp/tdvd),
usually.

If you take k3b out of that toolchain (for dvd's) that's one less
thing that might go wrong, although I have not had too many problems
with it for data & audio cd work.
