I've automated the install Etch on Dell Poweredge series using 'preseed'
method and a handful of perl scripts.
The effect is similar to using FAI.

kernel 2.4.x
Then upgraded to a precompiled kernel (SMP 2.6.x). <-- upgrading to a
precomplied kernel was also automated using the 'preseed hooks'. So this
is relatively painless for the N amount of machines the lab guy had to
install.
I don't recall if installing from CD/DVD gives an option to install flavors
of either kernel (2.6 or 2.4).
I know that I could control it using my own concoction preseed method.
Hope this helps.
