Is that true even for color laser printers?

My requirements are:
- cheap
- color
- works with Linux
- knowing the amount of ink / toner remaining is not a pain in the ass
- reliable
- ink / toner still available several years from now

I'm searching newegg.com and in the color laser category, there's only 1 
printer under $200, and only 4 between $100-$200. The majority are $500-$750
Sure, the toner lasts forever, but still the upfront expense is pretty 
hefty.
