My users love the Brother 1440 laser Reverend Stan gave me but I haven't started refilling it yet.
     I like Canon printers for color and often find recent printers like the pixma's work fine using old drivers like bjc7000 under cups. I use the bjc6000 driver for my s400's now as the s400 driver takes even longer, especially at 720x720. Have not setup a Redundant Array of Inexpensive Printers, using s400's, yet.  Inkjets get economical after buying a continuous ink system and modifying the printer. I refill black as I've got gallon/2 of it and use privateabacus24/7.com to get new color cartridges.  
     I'd love one of the old Canon tub inkjets as you just yank the cartridge, pop the lid and refill; but offices disliked the instant dump feature so you won't find any of those. 
     Usually I just buy something cheap w rebate I reasonably expect will work, not Lexmark! My s400's were donated, replacing my ip3000 that broke and the Canon ip2000 I gave to a Mac user. My lasers were donated. I have a very cheap hp in closet that may work with linux or 
might need to boot into w98 if enough printers fail to justify unpacking the hp. If I get good at Making Continuous Ink system conversions the work hp does with Linux might make that worst emergency hp my main printer. 
old jet printer is finally breathing its last - I've been waiting for 
this moment for a while. :-)

I'm looking for a _cheap_ printer that works well with Linux. Can
