Agreed on the Brother and Samsung laser recommendations.
My husband has a Brother HL-2070N, with its own ethernet interface,
making it super easy to configure for any OS. It replaced a Samsung
(USB, not ethernet) which was also well supported by Linux but
didn't seem as rugged as the Brother (it developed paper feeding
problems after a couple of years).
For a color inkjet and printing photos, Epsons seem to be supported
best. Even the low-end printers like the C88 can do pretty good
looking photos with fade-resistant ink. The photo printers have
somewhat better color, but their inks aren't fade resistant last
time I checked. I have a C86 myself; it has some problems with
borderless printing and color fringing on the bottom of the page
when printing photos at high resolution, but the image quality
(printed from gimp-print) is very good, and it's pretty fast and
quiet for everyday printing tasks.
