[svlug] good cheap Linux-compatible printer?

My old jet printer is finally breathing its last - I've been waiting for 
this moment for a while. :-)

I'm looking for a _cheap_ printer that works well with Linux. Can 
anybody recommend something?

The printer will be connected to a Linux machine running CUPS-1.2.4.

One of the issues with the old printer was that the ink level software 
was Windows-only, and libink didn't work very well with that type of 
printer, so it was hard to tell how much ink there was in the 
cartridges. I don't want this sort of trouble anymore.
