Hans Reiser had hoped to have the first day of his murder trial (jury
selection), today -- as he's until now consistently attempted to move
the trial forward and declined options that would have delayed it --
but instead appeared briefly at a pretrial hearing before Alameda County
Superior Court Judge C. Don Clay, to request delay for 3 weeks, to May
29. (That's 10 court days, apparently.) The delay was because big-name
defence attorney William DuBois is still busy on another criminal case
in Hayward.
It sounds as if the trial judge and courtroom haven't yet been assigned.
Judge Clay handles the criminal-trials calendar (and serves as
"Executive Judge") for the Rene C. Davidson Courthouse (1225 Fallon
Street, downtown Oakland) that handles felony trials in the northern
part of Alameda County.
Both prosecutor Paul Hora and DuBois were quoted as saying they expect
that the actual trial proceedings will be delayed longer than usual,
because they expect jury selection and pretrial motions to be more
extensive than usual.
