"The enormous success of design patterns is a testimonial to the
commonality seen by object programmers. The success of the book
Design Patterns, however, has stifled any diversity in
expressing these patterns." This quote from Kent Beck highlights
the success of patterns that began with a recognition and growth
of common design vocabulary, but pulls few punches in noting
that in many cases this growth has stalled. Many developers who
have come across the concept of design patterns have a
relatively narrow pattern vocabulary centered on a handful of
patterns from the Gang of Four -- and all too often one centered
on (or collapsing into) the singularity of Singleton.

This talk focuses on four common OO design patterns that can
improve the stability, extensibility, testability, coupling and
cohesion of an application or framework architecture. Of course,
the gregarious nature of patterns, the interwoven nature of
design and the discursive nature of the speaker's presentation
style means that more than four patterns will be touched on! The
four patterns of the title simply offer roots for and routes
into
discussion.
