I'm looking at the FC6 menu, but I think it is the same as for FC5:

This is configurable from the desktop menus.  Select "System",
then "Preferences", then "Removable Drives and Media".
Select "Mount removable media when inserted".

No idea why your preference changed, I thought mounting was the default.
