Darned good point.

I'd always assumed (having fecklessly joined the novice sendmail
administrator club lo! these many years ago), that you'd deal with that
problem by retaining some separate local delivery agent (like the
minimal configuration of something like Exim, or maybe using the likes
of tMTA: http://freshmeat.net/projects/tmta/) to handle strictly local mail
on an as-invoked non-daemon basis -- but have no relevant experience.
