I think netcat is definitely not what you want. You want wine to translate
usage of COM1 to usage of a TCP socket. AFAIK, wine cannot do this.
However, it is a standard feature of virtual machines and emulation
software. So, you could run, for example, Windows (or Linux with wine)
under qemu on your wife's Linux, have it talk to the network instead of
/dev/ttyS0, and have your computer forward that to your /dev/ttyS0. But,
this would make your wife's computer superfluous, since you can run qemu
on your own machine and use /dev/ttyS0 directly. The real solution would
of course be to make a working 32-bit chroot, but AFAIK, this is not
possible on 64-bit Ubuntu without something like Xen.
