It might be a ulimit problem as those two apps are notorious for using lots of
RAM. Are you starting them from a terminal or starting them via an icon in
the gnome/kde menu? If you start it from a terminal and leave that terminal
open till it crashes, you'll likely get some output on the terminal as to why.
What's the output of 'ulimit -a'?
