Install an IMAP server on the mailserver and have lookout connect to
that?  Then just keep the IMAP server.  This would allow you to manage
email space better and backups are easy.  No conversion to mbox or
anything.  Though you might need to rename folders to match the
way the specific IMAP server handles it's namespace.

Look at Courier-IMAP and dovecot as two that I use that support Maildir.
