The easiest way to solve your problem is to have the RH9 system talk
to a database running on another, less archaic machine.  It could even
be a virtual machine (using whatever virtualization you like - xen,
vmware, uml, etc.) if you don't want to dedicate hardware to it.  I'd
run nothing on the RH9 box except for the legacy software, and run
everything else on another (virtual?) machine with a more current OS.

And firewall the hell out of that RH9 box, needless to say.
Virtualization can help with that too.

Plus, virtualization is really trendy right now so you'd be doing what
all the cool kids do. :)
