If by 'possible with hardware' you mean 'possible to use an
appliance-like device to abstract some of the more annoying details at
the cost of losing some functionality', then yes.
The VPN device might go behind the DSL modem or replace it, depending
on the exact hardware involved. The general concept is that a remote
computer is able to use a software application to initiate a
connection, aka "tunnel", to the VPN device in your office. Once
connected, the remote computer will generally function as if it was
plugged into a port on your in-office switch.
