Just wanted to say thanks to all the advice given to me. I've plan to get
the O'riely book and How Linux Works book later this week. Reason for not
hearing from me sooner is that I tend to research my own problem before
bothering someone.
What I did so far
Partition 1 – Win XP 25GB NTFS
Partition 2 – Ubuntu 3GB EXT3
Partition 3 – Linux Swap 1GB EXT3
Partition 4 – Storage file 80GB EXT2
That's how I setup my laptop. My reasoning for it was that since I used XP
more often (at least for now) I wanted to use XP bootloader so whenever I
want to reinstall/play around with linux or I don't have to worry about
messing with the bootloader. Um, that didn't happen because I ended up
downloading the regular ubuntu and it didn't give me the option to leave the
MBR alone. Eh, <Shrug> Should have downloaded the alterntive version. I
will be formatting and installing again later to get it the way I want but
for now I chose to play with it. First impression of ubuntu… Not what I
expected of linux. Easy to install AND it installed everything correctly on
my Sony SZ220 laptop. Heck my hotkeys for Sound and screen adjustment
works. For XP I would have to install like 8 extra drivers and 4 more
applications for it to work the way I want. Only downside for me was that
it was a bit TOO easy :-) I mean I didn't have to do any commandline thing
except for changing some setting in GRUB to that by default it bootXP first.
(Sorry my girlfriend uses this computer sometimes too) I expected to use vi
or something like that and editing around settings using some text editor
but I rarely left the gui.
Oh, I remember someone mentioning that I not really a newbie because I've
done some linux stuff before. I still felt like a newbie because I really
didn't learn/remember much about what I did. Heck if didn't print out the
step by step instruction on how to upgrade my tivo HD or guide, I wouldn't
remember a thing. That's why I'm trying to learn linux this time around
instead of memorizing it.
Oh, the reason I have part 4 as EXT2 is that I found a driver that lets XP
Read/Write to that part so I figure it would be a great way to share files
with linux. Found it on sourceforge.net Heck I use a lot opensource
program already on XP… Figure why not an open source OS too. Not planning
to upgrade to vista.
Next step after understanding linux more, is to compile kernel(whatever that
is), look into samba, remote access, and look at iptables. Pretty ambitious
huh? Sorry for the long response.
