Hi, Scott! Welcome!
First... under linux, command line "switches" use - or --, not /
So, instead of /? for Linux utilities, --help (or sometimes -h) often helps.
Also, "man <commandname>" and "info <commandname>" ...
You didn't say if you'd settled on a particular version of Linux to start
from, so I'll put in a hearty recommendation for using Ubuntu linux.
I've seen it work flawlessly "from install forward" considerably more
often than any other distro.
While it's entirely possible to learn Linux using nothing but online
references (Google is your friend!) there are quite a few good books
around if you're so inclined.
Here are two books I personally can recommend:
- Ubuntu Linux for non-geeks, by Rickford Grant - No Starch Press
- Ubuntu Hacks, by Oxer, Rankin, and Childers - O'Reilly
There are quite a few great online sites where you can learn as
well - I'll leave it to other SVLUG mailinglist readers to post their
favorites on this thread.
Again, welcome to SVLUG! Keep us posted!
