I have been tracking the OpenMoko project on the FIC Neo 1973 for some time.

It is a smartphone that has a GPS unit, accelerometers, a good screen
(640x480), and runs open source software.

The estimated cost is $300 which seems good for a phone + GPS unit +
computer.

The software is in beta now although the hardware is available.
