[svlug] noise in photo processing

I was going to play with one of my pictures from my first friday night
blues set:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/2099597341/in/set-72157603422286845/

When I load the raw picture from ufraw into gimp, it seems to get a
lot noisier. This seems to have something to do with gimp only being
8-bit.

Even looking at the jpeg from ufraw in gthumb vs gimp, at about the
same size, gimp looks noisier.

I've got the various versions of the picture at:
http://red4est.com/lrc/pix/0712/gimpplay/

Including one that a friend retouched in photoshop (which is what
started this all off)

Is this just a limitation of the gimp? A perceptual thing? Or, if I
want to work on my images without losing quality will I have to use
another tool?
