keeping in mind that they may *NOT* behave *exactly* as rs232. To be
sure[1] to give them a constant name you'll have to dig into udev.

I can't add any detail since I never dug into it but that should be
the place where to look at... at least if you want to do it the
kosher way. I bet you can come up with a list of other awful tricks to
shuffle usb devices.

Try to look into /etc/hotplug* and dbus too.

[1] for a certain large value of sure but not including most of the
things you could see on Star Trek

[*] for list admin... I may guess the reason but quite too often my
emails are blocked by:

 - These recipients of your message have been processed by the mail
server: svlug at lists.svlug.org; Failed; 5.1.2 (bad destination system
address)

    Remote MTA svlug.org: network error


 - SMTP protocol diagnostic: 554 SMTP service not available
