i been doing "raid stuff" since its original code was released for linux
raid has its uses .. and reasons for when to do so and when it wil
not suffice
some additional raid stuff

most raid systems fail because people failed to install, configure and
test it
i like it... i can go in and fix it and get $$$ for (lots of) pizza

seems like it
the only popint is..
- there is more than one "correct" answer for some situations
-----------
regarding raid1 ... the 2nd disk ..
- initially, i didn't think you were "insistent" on building
the new svlug machine with raid on/before tuesday's rebuild,
but now, things seems to have changed, so i will go back and
redo it to rebuild the new svlug.org server with 2 disks
( raid1 aka mirror )
- i'll even test that it can boot from either disk

--- my excerpts from archives of "raid" that i found
initial notice to the svlug list, that the a new svlug disk will be
built was posted on Tue, 19 Sep 2006 01:41:40
some private mail discussions about raid, but mostly on other topics
was posted on/about Tue, 19 Sep 2006 15:39:25

but, unfortunately, i did NOT view that as a definitive
"do it this way or else rebuid it later"
i've explained privately and into svlug why raid1 by itself
is not sufficient "redundancy" and why disks should not
fail as much as some folks experience
- 1-5 disks per 1,000 disks i my normal expecation
and reality of disk failures compare to other
things that die
i mostly finished the new svlug install of the potential new system disk
on Wed, 20 Sep 2006 06:19:20
-- though i grant you that it didn't have apache/exim/mailman
config'd/test/working ( no time left at 6:30am - aka all nighter )
i posted to the group a comment about raid on Thu, 21 Sep 2006 15:50:10
but more importantly, there were no mention of raid on the new system
until today .. not a big issue per se as long as i know ahead of time
next time .. if there is one
your initial donated 2nd disk comes on "Thu, 21 Sep 2006 08:59:18"
while i'm sleeping :-)
- that's 2 days after the new disk was built
( after the disk is built .. even if it can be deemed worthless )
---------
we all have better things to do with "time", for me, it's like deliver two
new products ( needs some custom coding ) to paying customers in my case
svlug emails sure do take a bit o time
