Again, my apologies for not understanding this fact -- but you didn't
really make it very obvious. FYI, you might want to clarify that
matter on svlug at lists.svlug.org. You seem to have mentioned it in
this post:

http://lists.svlug.org/archives/svlug/2006-September/053613.html

  - i just finished installing "test" ( etch ) into the
    new 300GB seagate disk ..

  	- i did aptitude update and dist-upgrade
but i didnt check for anything much else
but it did get a newer kernel

  - see below for all the gory fun details of hair pulling

Earlier, in
http://lists.svlug.org/archives/svlug/2006-September/053606.html , you
said:

  - i'll throw in a freebie ( a new 300GB disk ) from fries

(That's very cool, by the way. Thank you!)

But it wasn't really clear that that's what you'd _done_. In fact,
screw it -- I'll just post this reply. ;->

OK, now that I'm clearer on what you'd done, I'm on-board with you.
Thank you for taking the trouble! That does indeed sound like a _very_
worthwhile plan for restoring a good, usable system in the short term.
