A friend, microscopist and pathologist, teaches at the local university
and maintains a web site well-known in his field; he recommends an app
called Picasa -- which is now available for linux. Quote :

     If you have any interest in image search and archiving
     functions, this is THE program for it.  I couldn't live
     without it.

I got it and fired it up. It looks pretty daunting to me, but certainly
very powerful; and some of the daunting may be due to the fact that I do
very little with pix, beyond using them for desktop backgrounds ...

(I'd be glad to hear more about this one from linux people, btw.)
