Well put. And I would add that it seems to be one ought to be able to
run appache - mod_ssl utilizing distribution packages as a requisite to
attempting to build a custom install. Get the packaged based system
working, then maybe learn about configuration and startup options. Then
take a look at how those distribution packages are patched, configured,
and compiled. And only then are you really ready to put together a hand
built custom installation. That would be the most logically grounded
plan -- and arguably the most productive path to follow.

Just my opinion.
