I have never used Debian based distros. But I don't think konqueror is 
destro. dependent.
Let me give you another way.
Fire up konqueror without any arguments.

[om at turyx /mnt/usb200_6/src/linux-exp]$ konqueror &
Link points to "/tmp/ksocket-om"
Link points to "/tmp/kde-om"
kbuildsycoca running...
Once it is up, Settings->Load View profile->File management
A two paned window should show up with Location bar, home directory on 
left and listing on the right pane.
Customize the view from View->View Mode
Once your customizations are over, Settings->Save View profile "File 
Management"

Now to launch konqueror with this view profile, you should start 
konqueror with --profile filemanagement cmdline option.
