I used to use konqueror a lot. But with FC5 I switched to GNOME 
(nautilus) ;-D

Follow these steps.
1.  konqueror --profile filemanagement &
2. Do all customizations you want. This profile gives a split panes 
windows. Change the view to icons/list....etc.
3. Save the profile (preferably as filemanagement itself).
4. Configure your shortcut / invocation to invoke konqueror as konqueror 
--profile filemanagement & (or whatever profile name you saved as).
