should work on any other distro? (provided the distros are using not 
very different kernels, etc.)

Is that a firmware issue? Those can be typically fixed.

I can find my way around such issues and I know Linux pretty well. But, 
I guess, if a card works out of the box on this particular distro and 
it's cheap, then by all means, I'll buy it.
But if it's expensive, then I'd rather get a cheaper one and try and 
hack the software.
