Hadn't thought of that, but will definitely check 
it out.

I found it very strange they'd drop jpeg support 
by default, but then some of the pages I read said 
it was done for copyright reasons.

Unfortunately, the pages I found for fixes, all 
concerned FreeBSD ports packages.

I'll first try and get 6.2.2 to build for tiffs 
and jpegs, and then resort to getting tiff-devel 
and trying the 5.x source that I have.

I know developers are not supposed to play sys 
admin, but clients seem to ask me to try what I 
can, and as long as I'm not messing with mission 
critical production sites they seem happy to let 
me have a shot.
