Bingo.  That's the problem right there.  Spending so much time on the
Windoze side had me thinking in terms of "machine.ADDomain.com" and not
"machine.DNSDomain.com".  In my smb.conf I had:

password server = <server>.<ADDomain>.com

I changed it to 

password server = <server>.<DNSDomain>.com

and everything is hunky dory.

Time for a weekend at my optometrist's office...
