I use a PPC-6700 (HTC Apache, its a XV6700 at verizon) and get tethering on
my account. I have super-fast internet all over the Bay Area. Once I am out
of the Bay Area, I have CDMA 1X. I really love that I can connect over
bluetooth. So far I have not been able to get USB/IRDA working under Linux.
I know the Palm phones (Treo 700p) work well with Linux, but their tethering
program SUCKS.
-Hope you find something that suits you
