[svlug] NIS problem

Hi,
I have a peculiar problem.

We have a small NIS net with three machines, and one the clients cannot
authenticate logins.

So for instance:

[root at algorithm root]# ypwhich
kauveri.Stanford.EDU
[root at algorithm root]# ypcat passwd | grep sanat
sanat:x:503:100:Sanatan Rai:/usr/home/sanat:/bin/bash
[root at algorithm root]# adduser sanat
adduser: user sanat exists
[root at algorithm root]# ssh sanat at algorithm
sanat at algorithm's password:
Permission denied, please try again.

[root at algorithm root]# nisdomainname
GoelMSAndE
[root at algorithm root]# tail --lines=2 /etc/passwd
gdm:!!:42:42::/var/gdm:/sbin/nologin
+::::::
[root at algorithm root]# tail --lines=2 /etc/group
gdm:x:42:
+:::
[root at algorithm root]# tail /var/log/messages
Oct 1 11:25:57 algorithm login(pam_unix)[1586]: check pass; user unknown
Oct  1 11:25:57 algorithm login(pam_unix)[1586]: authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=tty1 ruser= rhost=
Oct 1 11:25:59 algorithm login[1586]: FAILED LOGIN 1 FROM (null) FOR sanat, Authentication failure

Oct 1 11:28:17 algorithm login(pam_unix)[23482]: session opened for user root by LOGIN(uid=0)
Oct  1 11:28:17 algorithm  -- root[23482]: ROOT LOGIN ON tty1
Oct 1 11:31:54 algorithm sshd(pam_unix)[23625]: check pass; user unknown
Oct  1 11:31:54 algorithm sshd(pam_unix)[23625]: authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=NODEVssh ruser= rhost=algorithm.stanford.edu
Oct 1 11:31:58 algorithm sshd(pam_unix)[23625]: check pass; user unknown
Oct  1 11:32:01 algorithm sshd(pam_unix)[23625]: 1 more authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=NODEVssh ruser= rhost=algorithm.stanford.edu

It seems that the client sees all the maps fine but cannot authenticate.

I should add that doing

	su sanat

or
	cd ~sanat

works: the machine is able to mount the remote home and everything.

Any suggestions as to how I might trouble shoot this?

Thanks!
