I'm trying to get drivers installed under RH 7.2 with the 2.4.9-21
"enterprise" stock kernel, for a 3ware escalade 7850 RAID card (aka
"storage switch"). Neither the stock RH modules, nor the 3Ware-provided
modules will load. I'm slightly handicapped by a primary Debian focus
in recent years.

Attempting loading either set of modules results in a failed module
load, the 3Ware drivers (recompiled locally) fail with:

    # modprobe 3w-xxxx
    Warning: loading
    /lib/modules/2.4.9-21enterprise/kernel/drivers/scsi/3w-xxxx.o will
    taint the kernel: no license
    /lib/modules/2.4.9-21enterprise/kernel/drivers/scsi/3w-xxxx.o:
    init_module: No such device
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters,
including invalid IO or IRQ parameters
    /lib/modules/2.4.9-21enterprise/kernel/drivers/scsi/3w-xxxx.o:
    insmod /lib/modules/2.4.9-21enterprise/kernel/drivers/scsi/3w-xxxx.o
    failed
    /lib/modules/2.4.9-21enterprise/kernel/drivers/scsi/3w-xxxx.o:
    insmod 3w-xxxx failed

Kernel version:

    # cat /proc/version
Linux version 2.4.9-21enterprise (bhcompile at stripples.devel.redhat.com)
    (gcc version 2.96 20000731 (Red Hat Linux 7.1 2.96-98)) #1 SMP Thu
    Jan 17 13:37:56 EST 2002

I'm not terribly versed in device configuration. There are the
following parameters provided in the file "pcitable" with the 3Ware
support CDROM:

    $ cat pcitable
    0x13c1 0x1000 "3w-xxxx" "3ware Storage Controller"
    0x13c1 0x1001 "3w-xxxx" "3ware Storage Controller"

...which have been used to configure the following stanzas in
/etc/sysconfig/hwconf on the box, shooting somewhat blindly (not sure
this is the right thing to do):

    -
    class: RAID
    bus: PCI
    detached: 0
    driver: unknown
    desc: "3ware Inc|unknown device 13c1:1000"
    vendorId: 13c1
    deviceId: 1000
    subVendorId: 13c1
    ubDeviceId: 1000
    pciType: 1
    -
    class: RAID
    bus: PCI
    detached: 0
    driver: unknown
    desc: "3ware Inc|unknown device 13c1:1001"
    vendorId: 13c1
    deviceId: 1001
    subVendorId: 13c1
    subDeviceId: 1001
    pciType: 1

...a subsequent "# depmod -a" doesn't improve the picture.

Currently Googling for other war stories, little's turning up though our
own Brian "TheBS" Smith shows up....

Any assistance would be appreciated.
